The 2010 GST Leaders’ Forum was held May 5 & 6 in Caledon, ON. A group of recognized GST accounting and legal service professionals from across Canada was invited to explore some of the most pressing issues they are facing and to share knowledge experience and ideas in an open and professional environment.
The Forum was facilitated by CICA Continuing Education as part of our commitment to support thought leadership events and advance best practices in financial reporting and business in Canada.
The output from the GST Leaders Forum includes:
1. A submission to The House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance
2. A Special Guest Presentation called VAT Harmonization in Europe, by Stephen Bill, VAT Unit, European Commission
3. A submission to The Senate of Canada, Senate Committee on National Finance

Sales Tax Harmonization is more than a Sales Tax Matter

The implications of sales tax harmonization are enterprise wide as it has affects many facets of
your entire business, including product pricing (and customer management), capital and operating
spending (including vendor management), systems and compliance procedures. Sales tax harmonization
also carries with it income tax implications?
Ontario announced its intention to harmonize its provincial sales tax with the federal
goods and services tax (GST) in March 2009. BC followed suit four months later. The 13% Ontario
harmonized sales tax (OHST) and the 12% BC harmonized sales tax (BC HST) will take effect on July 1, 2010.
